Northwich Woodlands wins top show award
Northwich Woodlands has won a “Highly Commended” award from the Cheshire Agricultural Society at this year’s Cheshire Show. The award recognises the unique partnership that makes up the Northwich Woodlands, the large green oasis just north of the town centre that includes Marbury Country Park, Anderton Nature Park and Furey Wood.
The award presented by Cheshire Agricultural Society deputy president Sir Richard Baker Wilbraham was presented to Cheshire West and Chester Ranger Stephanie Hefferan who accepted on behalf of the partnership along with volunteer Alan Redley from the Friends of Anderton and Marbury community group. The partnership consisting of The Mersey Forest, Cheshire West and Chester Council, the Forestry Commission and other agencies has secured funding and restored previously derelict land to create over 360 hectares of woodland and countryside open to all – an area the size of 35 Wembley Stadiums. Volunteers from The Friends of Anderton and Marbury have played a key part in the Woodlands’ success, with a number of projects and volunteer days being carried out on site. Sarah Jeffery, The Mersey Forest in Cheshire West and Chester officer, said on behalf of the partnership: “It is fantastic to receive this award in recognition of all that the partners involved in Northwich Woodlands have achieved over the last 15 years. The project has created a huge area of vibrant accessible countryside right on the doorstep of the town. And with the support of the Friends group it continues to go from strength to strength.” Find out how you can get involved and about the range of different walks and trails available to explore, visit: www.northwichwoodlands.org.uk.
